Lyzium at the IAA MOBILITY
An essential part of modern vehicle development is the analysis and evaluation of test and simulation results. Unfortunately, current tools do not adequately support these processes.
There are highly specialized and sophisticated applications, that deal with test data of specified components or aspects of a car. But modern car development requires connecting test data stemming from different areas. Today, this is only possible without several manual intermediate steps.
That is why we are developing Lyzium. Lyzium integrates the entire process in a web application, starting with import including quality assurance, visualization, and analysis of the data, and ending with export and archiving. For additional requirements, Lyzium can easily be extended.
The use of Lyzium brings engineers decisive advantages, for example:
- Faster access and analysis because data is stored in a Big Data infrastructure and is immediately available for analysis
- Lower costs through centralized management
- More efficient collaboration between teams and departments through centralized management and analysis of data from different sources and components.
We will be presenting our Big Data platform Lyzium at booth B1.B414 from September 7 to 12 at the IAA MOBILITY in Munich.
Want to learn more about Lyzium or visit us at the IAA? Contact us!
You can find more details about Lyzium on the website https://lyzium.com as well as in our technical article published by the trade magazine Hanser Automotive (issue 1/2021).
Successful HERMES certification
We are pleased to announce that several Karakun AG employees passed the HERMES 5.1 Foundation certification exam with flying colors in July 2021.
HERMES is a project management method developed by the Swiss Federal Administration. HERMES supports the control, management, and execution of projects of the most varied nature and complexity in information technology, the development of services and products, or the adaptation of business organizations. HERMES has a clear, easy-to-understand method structure and is easily expandable due to its modularity. With the latest extensions, agile projects are now also supported.
HERMES has already been used successfully in a large number of projects at a cantonal and communal level. But also at educational institutions and companies from the private sector, HERMES is well-suited. Knowledge of the HERMES project management method is now a mandatory requirement for federal and cantonal projects.
Our employees completed a two-day course at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) in Basel. The participants learned the base elements of the HERMES methodology (scenarios, modules, roles, tasks, results) and their interrelationships in small groups. In various exercises and with the help of sample documents, the knowledge just acquired could then be continuously consolidated. The participants also welcomed the wide range of dynamically generated test questions. For self-studies, the FHNW provided sample exams from previous years via their online portal.
At the end of the second day, the exam was taken on-site by a representative of TÜV Süd AG.
With our new HERMES experts, we are happy to be best prepared for future projects at a cantonal and federal level.
Karakun @ kmuRUNDSCHAU 2/2021
The kmuRUNDSCHAU magazine sees itself as a direct communication platform between providers from the future industries and decision-makers from Swiss SMEs.
In the current issue 2 / 2021, we introduce ourselves to the magazine readers under the title “More than just bits and bytes” (to the eMag).
Using three practical examples (Carbonfuture, Covalo and Helvetia), we offer a quick overview of our services. If you also want to know what is behind Lyzium, HIBU, OpenWebStart and VOLTA and what distinguishes us from other software companies, then read the full article (German, PDF).
SwissText 2021
For the 6th time, the three-day online conference Swisstext took place from 14-16 June 2021. The conference is the meeting place for text analysis experts from Swiss business and research. It is organized by the association SwissNLP (in cooperation with the two universities FHNW and ZHAW). As regular participants, we were also involved this year with a contribution. The poster “Understanding structural information in scanned documents” shows our approach for analyzing and processing tabular information in scanned documents.
Information extraction from tables
With our HIBU-Plattform, we develop custom solutions in the areas of enterprise search and text analytics. In these projects, we often deal with scanned documents that are digitized using OCR software. Standard extraction methods work well for continuous text but generally deliver insufficient results for tables because they ignore the table layout and thus hide important information / relationships. Typical problem areas are table cells whose content breaks across multiple rows, especially cells whose content can only be interpreted using the associated column heading.
Do you have any questions about the poster or the procedure?. Dr. Holger Keibel will be happy to answer them.
Networking at an online conference? Check!
How can participants at an online conference effectively link up with interesting contacts? That was one of the questions we asked ourselves when offering the organizers of SwissText 2021 our help.
The result was a networking format in which each participant in a session was randomly sent into a virtual room together with three other people. Once there, each person had a limited amount of time for a personal introduction. Before the session automatically ended, participants could exchange contact details if interested.
Of course, such a format cannot replace face-to-face exchange on site. But within the possibilities of an online conference, it worked very well. As the feedback from the participants shows, it was worth taking part:

SwissText 2021 has just ended – and we are already looking forward to next year. Hopefully on-site – but certainly once again with active support from Karakun.
Secure and retrieve sensitive data
More and more data is being digitised or produced directly in digital form. And more and more data and applications are moving to the cloud. Companies have to ask themselves how they can efficiently handle these volumes of data, evaluate them and find information in them. And how they deal with data that needs to be protected, in particular. How do you manage to offer automatic processing (AI) and other beneficial functions around data and reconcile these functions with data protection at the same time?
As part of the bridge2digital Security & Compliance event, we illustrated these challenges together with our partner DSwiss AG using current joint projects in the intersection of both companies. We took a closer look at search solutions and automatic document processing in the context of “zero-knowledge” data encryption.
Would you like to learn more about SecureSafe, the integrated intelligent search or the HIBU platform?
VOLTA @ ELECTRO-TEC digital 2021
ELECTRO-TEC is supposed to be the national meeting point for the Swiss electrical industry. This year’s edition takes place virtually on May 19 & 20. In addition to an extensive seminar program, companies present their products and services in digital showrooms. We will showcase

Still on the wave of success
On our third birthday, we look back on an extremely successful business year. All parameters – customers, employees, developments, projects, partners, and memberships – are pointing upwards.
In the various business areas, companies and organizations from the industry and the public sector were acquired as customers, such as Swisslex AG, the German startup Carbonfuture, the University of Basel, and LVM Versicherung. The number of employees was further expanded and now totals around 60. Almost 20% of our workforce is female, a high percentage in ICT companies. Additionally, the German branch, Karakun GmbH, was founded in Dortmund.
We are particularly proud of the launch of two new platforms: the HIBU platform and Lyzium.
The HIBU platform is a flexible platform for the efficient development of customer solutions in the areas of intelligent search and text analysis. It positions us as an innovative player in the growing Swiss AI landscape. Plus, we are now a member of SwissNLP, the Swiss Association for Natural Language Processing.
Lyzium is a Big Data platform for the analysis of measurement and simulation data in the automotive industry. Together with the acquisition of the German EXOKNOX GmbH announced a few days ago, the the way was paved for successful business in the automotive environment.
We can also report delightful developments in the products area: For example, the user base as well as the number of support customers of OpenWebStart, an open-source reimplementation of the Java Web Start technology removed by Oracle in Java 11, could be increased. OpenWebStart has been downloaded over 100,000 times since its release in 2019 and is running on an estimated 750,000 clients.
Likewise, a large number of new customers have been attracted to VOLTA. The cloud-based industry solution for the Swiss electrical installation industry was successfully expanded in terms of third-party system integration options, e.g. for time tracking.
As one of the founding members in the Eclipse Adoptium Working Group, we have successfully positioned ourselves as a Strategic Member. In addition to Karakun, members of the Working Group are industry giants such as Alibaba Cloud, Huawei, IBM, Microsoft, and Red Hat.
“We are extremely pleased with the developments and growth and look back with pride at the achieved milestones,” says Dr. Elisabeth Maier, CEO of Karakun AG. “When we founded our company April 1, 2018, we would not have dared to predict such rapid development. In particular, I would like to say thank you to all our employee. Without them, we would not be where we are today.”
Karakun takes over EXOKNOX GmbH
On April 1, 2021, Karakun AG will take over EXOKNOX GmbH based in Stuttgart (Germany). The German software company is one of the first start-ups to emerge from the Daimler AG innovation laboratory. All employees will be taken on, and the parties have agreed not to disclose the terms and conditions.
EXOKNOX’s offer is aimed at developers of technical systems such as simulation and test engineers or designers for whom functional component properties play an essential role. The software is considered a reference implementation of the FDX standard of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). FDX stands for “Functional Data Exchange” and enables a smooth exchange of development and simulation data between manufacturer and supplier.
“After a successful start in the corporate environment of a vehicle manufacturer, it was now important to find a partner with whom our product can be made accessible to the entire automotive environment”, says the old and new managing director of EXOKNOX GmbH Michael Baumann. “We are very proud to now belong to the Basel-based software company. Under the umbrella of Karakun, with his vast experience and know-how in software engineering, we will be able to make an important contribution to the digitization of development processes in the automotive industry.”
Hans-Dirk Walter, a member of the management and responsible for the automotive division at Karakun, explains: “We have been working very actively for some time on the challenges of digitization in the automotive industry. There is huge potential in this environment. Together with Lyzium, our Big Data platform for measurement and simulation data which was launched last year, we can offer an even wider range of solutions to simplify vehicle development. ”

USE A LOGGER
